Beskrivelse: Program of the Larisa Cinema Club, a branch of the Greek Film Archive. The front cover lists the title of the film: "ΤΗΕ RIVER" by Jean Renoir, at ACROPOLE. The fly bears a note by B.P. (probably Barbis Vozalis). The note presents the director and his early filmography ( «THE BITCH» (1931), “LA GRANDE ILLUSION”), that introduced him to the Greek public. After his passage through Hollywood in 1941 , Renoir went to India in 1951. There, through his film “THE RIVER” which describes the love of three girls for a young American, he creates a treatise on India and, at the same time, on life. Renoir’s film was characterized as a “philosophical short story” that combines an artist’s feel for color with a lover’s heart, making India’s beauty more apparent than «the reading of 50 important books would», according to the author. A major part in the film’s charm is played by its slow rhythm, Rhythm, though frantic, was a basic element in the director’s previous film. By shooting the film in India, the director managed to rid himself of the technical preconceptions of his time and create a film that is so close to a documentary that it «taught him a lesson» in his own words –it “made him review his satirical attitude for people and feel compassion for their weaknesses». The note ends with the point that the film belongs to the so-called «poetic cinema», in which the audience’s psychological state is not distinguished by that of the heroes – a fact that offers viewers the first opportunity to get acquainted with this type of cinema.
